Differences in Patient-Centered Burdens and Economic Outcomes Based on Sociodemographic Characteristics and Social Determinants of Health: A Scoping Review

As first author, I led a scoping review examining how patient-centered burdens and economic outcomes vary across sociodemographic characteristics and social determinants of health among U.S. patients, families, and caregivers.

The review synthesized evidence on financial, emotional, physical, and time-related burdens associated with accessing medical care, including direct medical costs, direct non-medical costs, indirect impacts, and intangible burdens.

The findings highlight the uneven distribution of patient-centered economic burdens across U.S. populations and point to the need for standardized measurement tools, intersectional research approaches, and policies that better account for the lived experience of patients and caregivers.
